NES Franchises We'd Like to See Revived on the Wii

October 30 2006 10:45:00 AM

After reading some of the comparisons of the NES and the Wii launch similarities and even talk of bringing Micro Machines back on the Wii, we thought there should be discussion about what NES classic franchises would be killer to be revived on the Wii. While Zelda, Mario and Metroid will never go away, what about some popular (and sometimes overlooked) series of NES games that haven't made it past the SNES or N64?

Castlevania

Castlevania

Castlevania made two awkward appearances on the N64, and has had a good run on the Game Boy with games like Aria of Sorrow and Circle of the Moon. If Konami is going to try to make a better 3D game than the attempts on the N64 (and even Lament of Innocence on PS2), the Wii is the place to give it a shot. Imagine using the Wii nunchuk and the motion sensors to crack the whip at flying Medusa heads!

RC Pro Am

RC Pro-am

At launch we'll have titles like Excitetruck and Monster 4x4 World Circuit. What about bringing RC Pro-Am into the 3D realm? A new version of the classic NES series, with more extensive tracks, weapons, and the ability to build and customize your RC car would be a hit.

Wizards & Warriors

Wizards and Warriors

A few of you may remember Wizards & Warriors and it's two sequels Ironsword (probably the best of the three) and the less worthy Kuros: Visions of Power. This little known series could be revived on the Wii, and turn into a 3D platformer complete with motion-sensing sword fighting.

Contra

Contra

Everyone has heard of Contra (and if they haven't, they certainly know the code to get 30 lives). Contra could be brought to the Wii as a 3D platformer, but what would be even more fun is to also include a multiplayer networked first-person gaming system similar to Halo, with all the classic Contra weapons like the Spreader gun and the Laser (and you could throw a few more fun weapons for good measure).

Double Dragon

Double Dragon

While this classic series never made it past the SNES, the time is ripe to bring back the Double Dragon franchise. Two-player simultaneous 3D fighting would be super fun, especially with the motion-sensor and Nunchuk.

Ninja Gaiden

Ninja Gaiden

Making an appearance on the XBOX was a sin for Ninja Gaiden. Repent and bring back Ninja Gaiden to it's rightful home! While we'll have Red Steel for sword fighting for launch, we know everyone would rather be sword fighting as a Ninja named Ryu Hayabusa. Take it a step further and make the game to look more like an anime production, and cut-scenes that the original Ninja Gaiden made famous could be seamlessly interwoven with game play.

Wishful Thinking....

So, do you think these games will ever make an appearance on the Wii? Maybe. More likely they'll make it onto the Virtual Console in their original form. But we can wish, can't we?

Toys R Us Pre-order madness

October 30 2006 10:31:00 AM

Around the Internet today there are lots of stories about campers at Toys R Us in line starting Saturday morning to pre-order the Wii. While I decided I'm too old to camp outside a store to pre-order a Wii, I did call on Saturday morning to my local Toys R Us to see what was up, and 7 people were already in line. There were 15 Wiis available for pre-order, so I figured there was no chance I would get one (maybe I'll take my chances on eBay).

Saturday night the local news had a story about the people in line at the same location...they interviewed just about everyone and they all said they didn't even plan on keeping the receipt. They were going to sell it to the highest bidder. I wonder how many of these kids have 50+ feedback, and can meet all the other requirements eBay put into place last week?

At any rate, check out this Digg post for some fun stories, and also a wrap-up at Kotaku.com.

Wii Shortages expected for 2007

October 27 2006 11:08:00 AM

Even though Nintendo will make 6 million Wiis available through March 2007, they still expect shortages when the Wii finally makes it hugely anticipated debut later in the year.

Nintendo's Yoshihiro Mori confirmed that they are on course to ship 6 million units before March 31st 2007, but suggested it may not be enough to supply the likely demand for the Wii.

It's unconfirmed whether Nintendo will be able to increase production to meet such demand. The decision to maintain the allocation at 6 million may mean that Wii shortages could be a problem going into the 2007, however.

New eBay Rules save you from Wii auction scams

October 27 2006 09:31:00 AM

After a large number of XBox360 scams on eBay last year (like selling just their Xbox360 *box* for $600 or more), eBay has put rules in place to help stop people from getting away with scams in the bidding frenzy that has already taken hold. eBay auctions for Wiis have been as much as $999, and may rise to more as launch gets closer and the preorder lists become full.

eBay has set in place the following rules for Wii auctions:

  • One console can be listed per seller at a time prior to the launch date (November 19th)
  • The seller must only accept PayPal payments and have a rating of 98% or higher to qualify for PayPal Buyer Protection
  • Minimum of 50 feedback
  • No 'Buy It Now' listings allowed
  • The listing must include a clear photo of the pre-order receipt

If you're bidding on a preorder receipt on eBay, good luck. You're going to be in competition with a lot of people willing to pay lots of money for the Wii.

Seven classic titles revealed for Wii Virtual Console

October 24 2006 12:13:00 PM

Nintendo has revealed 7 classic titles, 4 NES and 3 SNES, that will be available for purchase. Games are playable on the Wii's "Virtual Console", which emulates not only the NES, but also the SNES, and N64.

NES Titles for the Wii Virtual Console:

SNES Titles for the Wii Virtual Console

  • F-Zero
  • Sim City
  • Super Mario World

There are more Virtual Console titles expected. Nintendo has said that there will be 20 virtual console titles by the end of 2006, and starting in 2007 there will be 10 new titles available per month for purchase. NES titles will be $5, SNES titles will be $8, and N64 will be $10

More Mii Details

October 18 2006 10:35:00 AM

So far we know that Mii caricatured portraits created in the Wii channel system can be used as characters across a variety of Wii software. This article goes a little more in depth and tells about features such as sending Mii characters over the Internet, and more.

Nintendo DS can be used as a Wii controller

October 18 2006 10:27:00 AM

Pokemon Battle Revolution allows players to use their Nintendo DS as a controller instead of the Wii remote. It's first game to take advantage of this feature where the touch screen has a menu with Pokemon attacks. While I won't be thinking about purchasing a Pokemon game or a DS any time soon, it's still really cool that you can use two different systems to interact with each other.

Miss out on the first round of Wii Preorders at EB Games? So did we! It looks like Toys R Us will be offering Wii preorders October 29th, according to an article on SiliconEra.com.

2 Hours with the Wii

October 13 2006 04:07:00 PM

One lucky person got to spend 2 hours playing the Wii (most press have only gotten as much as 10 minutes!). She gives the lowdown on just how using the Wii works, and how it is amazingly fun.

Miyamoto: Wii hardware is basically a GC

October 13 2006 03:11:00 PM

"The hardware is basically a GC. We've upgraded our development tools to new versions but, you can still use GC programs as they are. With that in mind, I thought we could remake GC titles for the Wii and modify them to work with the Wii remote so that they’re more fun to play."

Makes more sense now that Zelda: Twilight Princess is so close graphically and stylistically to the demos seen at Spaceworld 2000:

Of course we all know what happened after that demo: it got people so excited, the release of Windwaker made a lot of people really upset. Seems they were just demoing what was to come with the release of their next-gen console.
